These days Malta is in the news a lot. Not only because of the migrant stream and the NGO SAR operations, but because of a number of young Dutch fatalities on the island lately.
In July there has been an incident on the St. Julians promenade where a drinking and driving situation ended up in a number of passers by being injured and a young Dutchman being killed.
Earlier this month a young Dutch woman was murdered in Sta Venera and recently a young Dutch male was killed in a jetski incident at St. George's Bay.
Police are investigating all these cases of course, in some cases making arrests. In Maltese newspapers it is customary to see pictures and full names of victims and suspects. Media discretion is somewhat limited when it comes to this kind of information.
Apparently Malta is becoming the place to be with young Dutch people these days. A while ago there was an item on the TV show '3 op reis' which seems to have intensified the attraction of the Maltese islands. This item mainly showed Malta as a part island though. In all honesty the highly commended English language courses appeal to youth as well, especially during summer breaks.
A word to the wise though. Be careful when visiting Malta. Accidents do happen, please be aware of the fact that Maltese law is somewhat more harsh than Dutch legislation and the penalties are way higher. Try to avoid situations where you may find yourself in trouble. I also refer to one of my earlier blogs on this issue.
Malta komt veel in het nieuws dezer dagen, onder andere door de stroom vluchtelingen, maar helaas ook door het aantal verongelukte , veelal jonge Nederlanders in de afgelopen weken.
In juli was er een incident op de boulevard van St Julian, waarbij een dronken persoon een groep mensen aanreed. Hierbij viel een dode te betreuren, een Nederlander.
Begin deze maand werd een Nederlandse vrouw vermoord in Sta Venera, en onlangs viel er een dode Nederlandse jongen te betreuren bij een jetski ongeluk in St. George's Bay
Bij al deze incidenten doet de politie uitgebreid onderzoek en arresteert vermoedelijke daders. Wel worden intussen foto's en volledige personalia van de daders en slachtoffers in de krant gezet.
De media zijn niet erg terughoudend wat dat betreft.
Malta is blijkbaar erg in trek bij jongeren. Sinds er een item was in het tv programma 3 op reis lijkt het er op dat de aantrekkingskracht groter geworden is. In dat item wordt Malta getoond als een land waar je heerlijk kunt feesten en drinken. Maar ook de uitstekende engelse taalcursussen lokken vooral jongeren in de zomer.
Misschien tot slot nog een wijze raad. Wees voorzichtig als je Malta bezoekt. Een ongeluk zit in een klein hoekje. Realiseer je heel goed dat de wetgeving strenger is dan in Nederland en de strafmaat beduidend hoger. Probeer dus situaties te vermijden waarbij je in de problemen kunt komen.
