Obviously the tourist season has started. This week we decided to go to Valletta and visit the exhibition of Picasso etches and Miró paintings in the Grandmaster's Palace.
The bus we usually take because it's never full, just drove by because this time it was crowded for some reason. A very helpful elderly lady came to our aid and suggested an alternative.
Luckily we are well aware of what to do in case a bus doesn't show up and we could think of a couple of alternatives ourselves. Going to Mater Dei hospital is one, because many buses come by including some less crowded lines. What the lady couldn't understand was that we normally walk there, she thought it very brave because of the distance.
Valletta was completely packed. Of course it is always crowded, but it being the Cultural Capital 2018 has apparently added to it's glory. The Triton Fountain near the city entrance has been completely renovated and is really beautiful to see now.
The Palace too attracted many tourists. We were lucky enough to enter right before what seemed to be a cruise ship's guided tour stormed the exhibition. The etches by Picasso were a little disappointing for our taste, the Miró paintings on the other hand were quite nice. There were a few where he had taken an original, somewhat traditional painting of another artist and just painted across it in his own, bright and broad style.
While we were there we also looked around the Palace itself and the Armory. It has been a wile since I was there. The Armory is very nice and gives a clear view of how the Knights used to fight their opponents.
Ticket prices were not too bad and include a reduced rate for seniors (60+) which we are about to be. Hubby though has yet to get used to that idea because when the ticket salesman took us for seniors, he shook his head and preferred to pay the full price.
Our way back was swift and smooth. The bus arrived within five minutes and we were able to sit. Contrary to the way in, no major traffic jams either, so we made it back home fast. All and all a successful trip, but I think we will avoid Valletta for a while.
Je kunt wel merken dat het hoogseizoen aanbreekt. We wilden deze week naar Valletta, om een tentoonstelling te zien van Picasso en Miró in het Grandmaster's Palace dat soms ook gebruikt wordt door onze president.
De bus die we altijd nemen en altijd plek heeft reed onze neus voorbij, omdat hij helemaal volzat. Een behulpzame oudere Maltese dame schoot ons gelijk te hulp om een alternatief te bedenken.
Gelukkig zijn we inmiddels erg goed op de hoogte als bussen niet gaan, en konden we zelf ook wat bedenken. Een ervan is naar het Mater Dei lopen, waar altijd wel een goede, ook minder drukke bus komt. De vrouw begreep echter niet dat we daar naar toe gingen lopen, zo ver weg.
In Valletta kon je over de hoofden lopen. Het is altijd al druk, maar nu doordat het culturele hoofdstad is, trekt het blijkbaar nog meer toeristen aan. De fontein bij het busstation is hierdoor wel erg mooi geworden.
Ook het Palace trok veel toeristen. Gelukkig konden we voor ergste massa binnenstormde nog de tentoonstelling zien. De schetsen van Picasso vielen ons tegen, maar Miró had leuke schilderijen. Hoewel over een bestaand schilderij wat kleurtjes kliederen wel erg makkelijk is. Maar het gaat om het idee.
En passant ook maar een kijkje genomen in een deel van het Palace en de Armory. Het was erg lang geleden dat ik daar geweest was. De Armory is leuk, geeft goed weer hoe de ridders elkaar en andere volkeren te lijf gingen vroeger.
De entreeprijzen voor bezienswaardigheden vallen in het algemeen mee. En voor senioren, 60+, wat we zeer binnenkort zullen zijn, is er zelfs nog korting. Echter manlief moet nog erg aan dit idee wennen, want toen de kaartjes verkoper ons inschatten als senior, schudde hij zijn hoofd en betaalden we voor het duurdere ticket.
De weg terug ging prima. De bus was er binnen vijf minuten en we konden zitten. Ook waren er geen obstakels, zoals op de heenweg, zodat we snel weer thuis waren. Al met al een geslaagd uitstapje, maar Valletta zullen we voorlopig mijden.
