Having walked around in Malta quite a lot, you get to know your way around the island and especially the area one lives in. But still it never stops to surprise you. Maltese towns are rather small but still you will always discover new quaint streets and alleys. These can lead you to places you thought were much further away and then suddenly you're there. It works the other way around as well, by the way.
Just a couple of examples. When on holiday, we used to stay in a hotel in St. Julians. Every so often we walked to Paceville, following the boulevard up to St. George's bay. That took us about twenty minutes but it was a nice walk, the weather was great, we were on holiday, so what did we care. One day we found a shortcut which takes under ten minutes.
Same goes walking to the Sliema harbor. From St. Julians just following the boulevard will take you there in a little under an hour. If you cut through Triq Manwel Dimech from Balluta bay you can do it in half an hour. Admittedly you miss part of the beautiful see views of course. You win some, you loose some.
It works the other way around as well like I said. So one day we were taking a walk in the general direction of Sliema and I thought I remembered a clever shortcut and we ended up all the way in Pieta. O well, you can't win them all.
But the bottom line is that it is very nice to take the time and just walk around a little. Once you get off the boulevard, there is much less traffic. You get to see a lot more of Malta that way. And don't be afraid to get lost. One way or another, if you walk as straight as possible in the direction you think the sea is, you will inevitably end up on the boulevard. So if you decide to visit Malta, have fun just walking around a little. And if in doubt, the Maltese are very helpful people who are always willing to give you directions.
Na al aardig wat te hebben rondgelopen in Malta, begin je behoorlijk de weg te weten op het eiland en zeker in het gebied waar je woont. Toch blijven er altijd verrassingen. Maltese stadjes zijn vrij klein maar toch kun je eindeloos straatjes en steegjes blijven ontdekken. Die leiden je dan vervolgens weer naar plekken waarvan je dacht dat ze veel verder weg waren. Omgekeerd geldt dat overigens ook.
Zomaar wat voorbeelden. Tijdens onze vakanties hier verbleven we meestal in een hotel in St. Julians. Bij tijd en wijle wandelden we dan naar Paceville via de boulevard tot aan St. George's bay. Daar deden we dan zo'n twintig minuten over maar het was een leuke wandeling., het was mooi weer, we waren op vakantie, dus wat maakt het uit. Op een dag vonden we een kortere route, die maar tien minuten kost.
Iets soortgelijks geldt voor de weg naar Sliema haven. Als je vanuit St. Julians gewoon de boulevard volgt, loop je het net onder het uur. Steek je af door Triq Manwel Dimich dan doe je het in een half uur. Toegegeven, je mist dan mooie zeezichten uiteraard. Maar ja, elk voordeel hep se nadeel volgens wijlen onze voetbalpaus.
Zoals ik zei, het werkt twee kanten op. Op een gegeven moment wandelden we ergens richting Sliema en ik dacht een stukje af te snijden waarop we uiteindelijk in Pieta uitkwamen. Nou ja, je kunt niet altijd winnen.
Uiteindelijk komt het er op neer dat het gewoon leuk is een beetje rond te zwerven. Eenmaal bij de boulevard vandaan is het verkeer een stuk rustiger en zie je veel meer van Malta. En wees niet bang om te verdwalen. Als je maar gewoon rechtdoor loopt in de richting waar je de zee verwacht, kom je vanzelf wel ergens op de boulevard uit. Dus als je een keer naar Malta komt, geniet en zwerf wat rond. En als je twijfelt, de Maltezen zijn bijzonder behulpzaam en wijzen je graag de weg.
