In the last blog-post you may have read that we had a couple of challenges ahead of us. First one wasn't to find a place where one can buy some decent DIY materials. The second one was to mitigate the risk of leakage in our kitchen whilst reinstating proper and redundant water supply to the rooftanks. As it so happens we succeeded in both and here's how.
In both cases, Malta Yellow Pages are your friend. Provided of course you identify the correct search criteria. In the case of DIY materials it led us to a quite large DIY shop located only two hundred meters from a store we go to on a regular basis. Turns out they had everything we needed and deliver if you wish at a nominal fee. So we bought some pine wood, a jigsaw, hinges, doorknobs, magnets, cable ducts and aluminum profiles. The larges materials promptly delivered a couple of days later. Obviously there were some minor issues. A sales manager didn't quite seem to understand what I was talking about, the woodshop manager who tried to multitask but couldn't, but in the end everything seemed to be under control. A small hick-up in delivery because they didn't notice there were two separate invoices, but all's well that ends well.
So now we're building a cupboard for the back room, should be finished by tomorrow. So far it's looking good. Next week we'll build a small case for the circuit breakers and a rack in the shaft for some plants and our spare gas cylinder. Apart from that some minor chores like hiding loose cables and replace defunct thresholds between tiled and wooden floors.
The kitchen leakage was quite a funny case. When we bought the apartment, there was a cupboard beneath the kitchen sink containing the water supply to the mixer and the dishwasher. Both were functional. Apart from that there was what appeared to be a void pipe with a narrow tube attached. So we had our kitchen refurbished and the plumber told us the tube was probably at one time used for a water purification system based on reversed osmosis. That was in line with the fact that the old sink had an extra tap. We didn't pay any attention to it, until on one day I happened to walk into the living to get something and found the floor flooding. Opening the cupboard I noticed water gushing out of the (obviously not so) void pipe.
After closing of all water and determining step by step which tap was safe to open we found out that closing the water supply to one of the rooftanks solved the problem. There must be an elbow somewhere that leads the pressurized water back to the kitchen, but we couldn't (and can't) find it.
Since we were unable to find the necessary part to close off the pipe once and for all, I thought of another solution which failed as well. Then I got a brainwave. If the pipe and tube were meant for a water purification device, why not try a supplier of those devices. Looking through the Yellow Pages I found one in the city of Attard, opened from 07:00 to 19:00, what more can you want. So this week we went there. Easy to find, but the store seemed to be a garage and it was closed.
Luckily, the Maltese are always very helpful. Next to the garage was a boutique. We went in and asked the shopkeeper whether he knew when the neighboring shop opened. He didn't, but told us the owner lived right next-door and that his wife must be at home because her car was in front of the house. We thanked him and rang the bell. The lady opened the door and told us het husband was in their other shop, but she would try to help us. She did try, but couldn't find the right item. So we agreed to call her husband later that day and arrange for a meeting.
In the afternoon we called him and he told us that the next day he had an appointment near us and could come by after. And so he did, we explained the problem and he suggested he could change the pipe into a standard with tap. To spare you the whole story, in the end our mixer is working properly now, the leakage is solved and we are very happy. He turned out to be a Palestinian from Jerusalem who started his business in Malta. We are saving his business card for future reference of course. Professionals like him one needs to keep in mind.
In between the chores we will be trying to find some time next week to do some shopping in Tigne Point, which is a large shopping mall in Sliema. Amongst others we will try to find an appropriate Xmas decoration, Maltese style. Wait and see....
Zoals in de laatste blog te lezen was, hadden we nog wat uitdagingen voor de boeg. De eerste was om een beetje fatsoenlijke bouwmarkt te vinden. De tweede was het risico van lekkage in onze keuken te minimaliseren en de redundante watertoevoer naar onze daktanks te herstellen. Laat dat nou beide gelukt zijn en wel als volgt.
In beide gevallen zijn we uit de brand geholpen door de Gele Gids. Nadat we de juiste zoekterm hadden gevonden dan. Voor wat betreft de bouwmarkt hebben we een heel behoorlijke gevonden vlakbij een woonwarenhuis waar we regelmatig komen. Het bleek dat ze alles hadden wat we zochten en ze ook nog eens voor weinig thuisbezorgen. Dus hebben we vurenhout, een decoupeerzaag, scharnieren, deurknoppen, magneten, kabelgoten en koppelprofielen gekocht. De grotere spullen werden een paar dagen later bezorgd. Uiteraard waren er wel wat kleine dingetjes. Een verkoper die niet echt begreep waar ik het over had en een timmerwerkplaats manager die vijf dingen tegelijk probeerde te doen maar daarin niet slaagde. Maar uiteindelijk leek alles toch goed te komen. Klein hikje in de bezorging nog; ze hadden even over het hoofd gezien dat ze materiaal van twee verschillende facturen moeten leveren, maar uiteindelijk toch goed gekomen.
Dus nu zijn we een kastje in de achterkamer aan het bouwen, dat moet morgen wel af zijn. Ziet er vooralsnog goed uit. Volgende week een kastje om de stoppenkast maken en een rek in de schacht voor wat planten en de reserve gasfles. Dan nog wat kleine dingetjes zoals kabels wegwerken en kapotte dorpels vervangen.
De lekkage in de keuken was ook wel een dingetje. Toen we dit appartement kochten, zat er onder de spoelbak een kastje met daarin een aansluiting voor de mengkraan en de vaatwasser, allebei werkend. Ook was er een op het oog loze pijp die leek te zijn gebruikt voor een waterzuiveraar. Dat klopte wel met het feit dat de spoelbak een klein extra kraantje bevatte. Verder niet op gelet, tot het moment dat ik op een dag de huiskamer inliep en de vloer flink aan het overstromen was. In het keukenkastje bleek de zogenaamde loze leiding nu flink water te spuiten.
Dus alle waterleidingen dichtgedraaid en daarna stap voor stap gekeken welke risicovrij weer open konden. Wat bleek, was dat het dichtdraaien van de watertoevoer naar één van de daktanks het probleem oploste. Ergens daarachter moet een knietje zitten dat het water onder druk terugleidt naar de keuken, maar dat hebben we nog steeds niet gevonden.
Omdat we het voor de afsluiting noodzakelijke onderdeel niet konden vinden, had ik een andere truc bedacht, die helaas ook niet werkte. Toen had ik een helder idee. Als die waterleiding bedoeld was voor een waterzuiveraar, was het een optie om eens te checken bij een leverancier van dat soort spul. In de Gouden Gids vonden we er eentje in Attard, die van 07:00 tot 19:00 open zou zijn, wat wil een mens nog meer. Makkelijk te vinden ook nog, maar het bleek wel een garagebox en ook nog eens gesloten.
Maar gelukkig zijn de Maltezen erg behulpzaam. Naast de garage was een kledingboetiek. Wij naar binnen en de eigenaar maar eens vragen of hij wist op welke tijden zijn buurman echt open was. Dat wist hij niet, maar wel dat de betreffende eigenaren direct naast zijn winkel woonden. En de vrouw moest thuis zijn, want haar auto stond voor de deur. Na hem bedankt te hebben, daar maar eens aangebeld. De dame die open deed, vertelde dat haar echtgenoot in hun andere zaak was maar dat ze zou proberen ons te helpen. Dat probeerde ze ook zeker, maar het goede onderdeel vonden we niet. Dus spraken we af haar echtgenoot te bellen voor een afspraak.
's Middags belden we hem en bleek hij de volgende morgen een afspraak vlakbij ons te hebben. Daarna kwam hij langs. We legden het probleem uit en hij stelde voor de waterleiding te voorzien van een standaard aansluiting en een kraan. Om het hele verhaal te besparen; onze kraan werkt nu goed en de lekkage is verleden tijd. En wij blij. Hij bleek een Palestijn uit Jeruzalem te zijn die op Malta een zaak had gestart. Zijn visitekaartje bewaren we zuinig; dit soort vakmensen moet je in ere houden.
Tussen het klussen door proberen we volgende week wat tijd te maken om even te winkelen in Tigne Point, een winkelcentrum in Sliema. Onder andere zoeken we nog wat leuke Kerstversiering in Maltese stijl. Afwachten maar...
